Where Motherhood Becomes Art

Pregnancy is such a short chapter in a woman's life, yet it's one filled with incredible change, anticipation, and emotion. A maternity portrait session is an opportunity to preserve this season in a way that goes beyond simply documenting a growing belly.

At Candy Bagwell Photography, my maternity studio in Fletcher, North Carolina, is a space where expecting mothers can step away from everyday life and create something beautiful that celebrates both motherhood and the woman behind it.

Whether you envision something soft and romantic, bold and glamorous, classic and timeless, or artistic and intimate, your maternity portraits can be designed around you.

From Soft and Romantic to Bold and Glamorous

Your maternity portraits should reflect what makes you feel beautiful.

During a studio maternity session, we can create multiple looks that give your finished gallery variety. Flowing fabrics can create soft, romantic portraits, while florals add a feminine fine-art element. A statement bodysuit can completely change the mood and create something bold and glamorous.

For mothers who prefer more coverage, beautiful gowns and other wardrobe options can create equally striking portraits.

The goal isn't to make every maternity session look the same. It's to create portraits that feel intentional and personal to the mother I'm photographing.

Your Maternity Session Can Look Like You

There is no single way a maternity portrait session should look.

Some mothers are drawn to flowing fabrics and delicate florals. Others love beautiful maternity gowns or a more traditional portrait. And some want to step outside their everyday style and create something dramatic they may never have imagined themselves doing.

That's one of my favorite things about maternity photography.

Your session doesn't have to fit into one particular mold.

Maternity Portraits Can Include the Ones You Love

Your maternity session is centered around you, but motherhood doesn't always begin with the baby you're carrying.

When appropriate for your session, we can also create a few portraits that document the connection between you and the family already waiting for this little one.

Those images often become some of the most meaningful from the entire session.

A Maternity Wardrobe Designed for Creating

One of the things that can make planning maternity photographs feel overwhelming is wondering what you're going to wear.

My Fletcher maternity studio offers access to an extensive maternity wardrobe with more than 80 gowns and pieces, along with fabrics and other styling elements that can be incorporated into your session.

Depending on the maternity experience you select, we can create different looks throughout your session—from timeless and feminine to dramatic and artistic.

You don't have to walk into your session already knowing exactly what you want. We'll talk about the style you're drawn to and plan your portraits from there.

Fine Art Maternity Portraits

For mothers who want something more artistic, maternity photography can also be an opportunity to celebrate the shape and beauty of pregnancy itself.

Using careful posing, professional studio lighting, fabrics, florals, and intentional styling, we can create portraits that feel more like artwork than traditional photographs.

How much or how little you choose to show is completely personal. You should never feel that you have to recreate a particular photograph. Instead, we'll create something that fits your comfort level and the way you want to remember this season.

When Should You Schedule Maternity Photos?

For most expecting mothers, I recommend planning maternity portraits for approximately 27–32 weeks of pregnancy. This is often a beautiful time to photograph the belly while Mom is still comfortable enough for different poses and wardrobe changes.

Sessions can sometimes be photographed later, depending on your pregnancy and comfort level, and I generally photograph maternity sessions up to approximately 36 weeks.

Because maternity sessions need to happen within a fairly specific window, it's best to reach out before you reach that stage so we have time to plan your session and reserve your date.
